If you've already seen the Windows Vista "gadgets" working right on the desktop and you - like me - felt a little envy, don't worry. You can do the same thing on your Mac with your dashboard widgets. All you need is to follow these instructions: 1- Open the Terminal (look for it inside "Applications > Utilities"). 2- Type (or copy and paste) the following sentence, followed by RETURN: defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES 3- Open the Apple menu (clicking on the small apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen) and choose "Log out [username]". 4- Restart a new session by clicking on your username. Now the fun begins! 5- Open dashboard by pressing the F12 key. 6- Click on the widget you wish to place at the desktop and keep the left mouse button pressed as you close the dashboard (press F12 again). 7- Release the widget at any place in the desktop, and it will work as if it were still inside the dashboard. To put the widget back on the dashboard, do the opposite: left-click it, hold the mouse button, open dashboard, and release it. 8- If you choose later to disable this trick, open Terminal again and repeat the same sentence, but now type "NO" instead of "YES" at the end of the phrase. Then log out and restart your session. The only limitation when using widgets this way is the fact that they'll remain always on top of all other windows, so you'll have to place them in an unused area of your desktop. But if you screen monitor is a large one, this won't be a trouble. |
