New Mac users coming from the Windows platform may feel a bit lost at first, asking themselves in what key points the two systems are different. So, I thought it could be useful to explain here my personal opinions on this subject:

- Mac OS X is safer and has no viruses
Yes, it is indeed true that, by not being vulnerable to any viruses, nor spywares, Mac OS x is much safer than Windows - even safer than Windows Vista. Until now, for example, it's impossible to steal online bank passwords on a Mac. Besides, Mac OS X's own arquitecture makes much more difficult network invasions.

- Mac OS X doesn't slow down over time
Although officially denied, everybody knows that Windows "rotts" over time. As months go by, Windows takes increasingly more time to start up, to shutdown and to run applications, even if you are a careful and moderate user. Well, the good news is: this problem DOES NOT EXIST on the Mac platform. Even years after the first system install, the overall speed remains the same. So, you may forget about that annoying routine of cleaning and reinstalling the system every year... In my opinion, this is the biggest advantage of Mac OS X over Windows.

- It is far more difficult to make a big mess on Mac OS X than on Windows
Any clumsy user can cause a lot of damage on any computer, but it's undeniable that it's a lot harder to do it on a Mac than on Windows. The reason for this is Mac OS X's stronger security system, which protects critical files more efficiently than Windows (although this has improved with windows Vista).
